They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it can also feel like distance only damages relationships. If you and your partner are trying to make things work while living in different cities, don’t lose hope. While things are going to be difficult at times, plenty of happy couples have shown that a relationship can withstand the miles apart. Here are 6 tips for making things a little easier:
1. Get into the long-distance mindset.
Before you part ways, make sure you and your partner have an open discussion about your expectations. Make sure you both are on the same page when it comes to commitment, communication, and travel expectations.
2. Plan out a visit schedule.
How long are you two willing to spend time apart before visiting one another? A few weeks? A few months? Of course, the “right” amount of time varies from couple to couple and depends on how far away your partner lives, but it’s a good idea to have a schedule set before the move.
3. Make video calls a priority.
Communication is key, but it’s hard to make a relationship thrive on texts alone. Call your partner when you can, and Skype or FaceTime each other regularly.
4. Celebrate one another.
It’s easy to forget how important it is to celebrate one another when you’re not seeing each other all time, but making your loved on feel special is SO important!
5. Remember the big picture.
No one said long distance was going to be easy, but you have to keep the big picture in mind. Keep reminding yourself that the distance is temporary, and if you’re truly in love, it’s going to be worth it.
