Cardiff is a growing city and with good reason; the Welsh city offers something to suit every taste. Wales has the most castles, per square mile, in Europe and ‘Castell Caerdydd’ (Cardiff Castle) is just one mighty example and well worth a visit.

Whether you love nature, a night on the town or a mini cruise around the bay, there are plenty of opportunities in which to partake and get to know your date better.

Starting with Castell Caerdydd, which was originally built in the late 11th century and has been subject to many further renovations ever since, this castle owns a tremendously rich history. The grounds are picturesque and the interior of the castle is lavish and incredibly designed. There is a cafe or you can take a picnic and a blanket and enjoy the views while sharing lunch.

St Fagans National Museum of History is one of Wales’ most visited attractions and for good reason. The site is home to over forty buildings that have been painstakingly moved and rebuilt as before to show visitors how life used to be in bygone times. These include a farmhouse, Post Office, Iron Age Roundhouses and tannery, all on the grounds of the 16th-century manor house castle.

If you want to go more coastal, there are a variety of Cardiff Bay cruises to choose from Cardiff Cruises. You can have a blast on a high speed rigid inflatable boat with Bay Island Voyages. If you like the wind in your hair, The Open Boat is a must. Aquabus do 45-minute trips, taking in the nature reserve, the Barrage and Mermaid Quay.

Mermaid Quay is also great for a romantic meal and a few drinks after the Bay tour. With a wide range of restaurants and bars and outdoor seating, you also get a stunning view of Cardiff Bay. There is a 5 screen cinema complex called Everyman, one of a handful of boutique independent across the UK, showing mainstream, independent and classic films and the option to dine too. If you want a belly laugh together, visit The Glee Club, which has been host to some famous names over time.

If you fancy something more al fresco, take a picnic to Roath Park Lake or visit the cafe and ice cream kiosk in the Botanical Gardens. You can hire a boat and take a romantic trip out onto the lake, or simply meander through the beautiful woodland trails. There are courts for a spot of tennis or basketball and bowling greens if you both fancy a game?

Bute Park is another green space worth visiting. With an extensive arboretum and various woodland trails to follow, this stunning park is just behind Cardiff Castle. You can see the Animal Wall where different animal carvings have been placed as if peering over the wall.

Bute Park honey can be bought at the gift shop, courtesy of the park’s own apiary. You can watch the bees going about their business through a special window at the park’s plant shop. Look out for the small plaques throughout the park – snap the QR code for more information about parts of the park. You can chat and enjoy a dreamy walk until your hearts are content, all while learning more about each other, without having to take out a loan for an expensive date.

The Wales Millennium Centre is a well-known and integral part of Cardiff. The uniquely styled arts centre provides musicals, ballet, opera and dance performances – perfect for a cultured evening with your date!
